The
agreement was singed in Zambia in 1976. The current member states of ARIPO
are Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone,
Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
However, only Swaziland, Malawi and Zimbabwe have ratified the
Protocol.
At the current time, it is possible to
designate six ARIPO states in a trademark application, namely:
Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Tanzania (Tanganyika), Uganda, and
Zimbabwe.
Searches would need to be conducted at the
National Registers of each of the above countries should protection
be required in all relevant countries.
